Girls Only Football Tournament – A Celebration of International Women’s Day!

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we hosted a girls-only football tournament—and what a day it was!

We invited three nearby schools—Grace Angels, Mkombe Academy, and Ezo Moyo—to join us for an afternoon of competition, teamwork, and fun. The day kicked off with a shared lunch, ensuring that all players were fueled up and ready to give their best on the field.

Now, let’s talk about the biggest challenge of hosting tournaments at Eco Moyo: our sand field. By midday, it feels like it’s a million degrees, making it nearly impossible to play barefoot. So, we had to wait until the afternoon, when the sun wasn’t quite as brutal, and the pitch was finally cool enough to run on without burning our feet.

We made this tournament girls-only to celebrate Women’s Day and shine a light on girls in sports. In our community, girls often have more responsibilities at home—helping with cooking, collecting firewood and water, and looking after younger siblings. Because of this, they don’t always get to stay after school like the boys do, which means less time to pursue their own interests. This tournament was just the first of many girls-only events, and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. The energy was incredible, with students from all schools cheering on the players!

Now, if you’ve been following us on social media, you probably already know how this story ends—yes, Ezo Moyo girls took home the trophy once again! They are just too good! This time, they had their sports coach leading the way, along with support from our former students, Kastjiana and Nelly—clearly, that must have been a key part of their winning strategy. 😉

This tournament was an amazing success, and we can’t wait to host even more events like this in the future. Here’s to more opportunities for girls in sports! 💪⚽🎉
